What is the Present Continuous Tense?

The present continuous tense is used to describe actions or events that are happening at the moment of speaking or that are happening around the time of speaking.

الشرح بالعربية:
زمن المضارع المستمر يُستخدم لوصف الأفعال أو الأحداث التي تحدث في لحظة الكلام أو التي تحدث حول وقت الكلام. مثال: "أنا أدرس الآن" = I am studying now

How to Form It:

Subject + am/is/are + Verb(-ing)

Rule: Use the present tense of "to be" (am, is, are) + the present participle (-ing form) of the main verb.

القاعدة:
نستخدم الفعل المساعد (am/is/are) + الفعل الأساسي مع إضافة (ing)
• I, We = am/are
• He, She, It = is
• You, They = are

📝 Examples:

✅ Positive (إيجابي)

1. The dog is barking.
2. The kids are playing in the park.
3. The rain is falling.

❌ Negative (سلبي)

1. The dog is not barking.
2. The kids are not playing.
3. The rain is not falling.

❓ Interrogative (استفهامي)

1. Is the dog barking?
2. Are the kids playing?
3. Is the rain falling?

💭 Hint: "He" is singular. Use "is" + verb-ing

💭 Hint: "Write" ends with 'e'. Drop the 'e' before adding -ing
4. The dog ................. (bark) at the mailman.
💭 Hint: "The dog" is singular (it). Use "is"
5. The birds ................. (sing) on the trees.
💭 Hint: "Birds" is plural. Which form do we use?

Correct Answers:

  1. The children are playing outside.

🔄Exercise 2: Negative to Affirmative
Change the following negative sentences into affirmative:
💡 Teacher Tip: Remove "not" and keep the rest of the sentence the same
1. I am not studying for the exam right now.
💭 Hint: Simply remove "not" from the sentence
2. She is not working on her project now.
💭 Hint: Keep "She is" and remove "not"
3. He is not watching TV currently.
💭 Hint: Remove "not" between "is" and "watching"
4. We are not eating lunch at the park today.
💭 Hint: Keep "We are" and remove "not"

Correct Answers:

💭 Example Answer: "I am studying English" or "I am doing my homework"

Sample Answer: I am learning English grammar right now. / I am studying the Present Continuous tense.

نموذج الإجابة: أنا أتعلم قواعد اللغة الإنجليزية الآن.

2. Is she studying for the test right now?
💭 Answer with: "Yes, she is..." or "No, she isn't..."

Sample Answers:

✅ Yes, she is studying for the test right now.

❌ No, she isn't studying right now. She is watching TV.

3. Are they playing soccer together?
💭 Answer with: "Yes, they are..." or "No, they aren't..."

Sample Answers:

✅ Yes, they are playing soccer together.

❌ No, they aren't playing soccer. They are playing basketball.

4. Is he working on the presentation at this moment?
💭 Think about what "he" might be doing right now

Sample Answers:

✅ Yes, he is working on the presentation at this moment.

❌ No, he isn't working on it. He is having lunch.

5. Are we having dinner with friends tonight?
💭 Note: This uses present continuous for a future plan

Sample Answers:

✅ Yes, we are having dinner with friends tonight.

❌ No, we aren't having dinner with friends tonight.

Note: Present Continuous can also be used for future arrangements!
